Bénin and Niger commit to removing all barriers to bilateral cooperation
Cotonou and Niamey demonstrated a shared resolve to strengthen their partnership across multiple sectors during an official state visit to Niger by the Béninois President, Romuald Wadagni. The visit took place following an invitation from his counterpart, Abdourahamane Tiani, marking a significant step in West Africa news and regional diplomacy.
In a joint statement released after the high-level meeting, both heads of state emphasized the vital necessity of deepening cooperation in political, economic, scientific, and cultural spheres. To facilitate this, they agreed to increase bilateral exchanges, specifically through the regular reactivation of the Niger-Bénin joint permanent commission for cooperation.
A central pillar of their discussions was the formal commitment to eliminate all hurdles hindering bilateral relations. Most notably, the leaders focused on the urgent reopening of the Bénin-Niger border. This transit point had been restricted for an extended period due to diplomatic friction, which had previously stifled the movement of people and local economic activities.
To translate this political will into immediate action, the two leaders decided to form a dedicated committee of experts. This group is responsible for identifying specific bottlenecks and recommending solutions, with a strict mandate to submit their findings within a fifteen-day timeframe.
The dialogue between Wadagni and Tiani, which included their respective delegations, was characterized by an atmosphere of cordiality. These talks provided an opportunity for a thorough review of the challenges facing both nations, as well as broader issues impacting the sub-regional and international landscape.
Both Presidents celebrated the long-standing ties of brotherhood and friendship that unite Niger and Bénin. They reaffirmed their dedication to revitalizing this partnership to meet the high expectations of their citizens, who seek peace, security, and sustainable development within the African economy today.
President Wadagni, who was inaugurated on May 24, has made the normalization of relations with neighboring countries a cornerstone of his administration. In a gesture of continued cooperation, he extended an official invitation to President Tiani to visit Bénin in the near future.
