The Republic of Benin has intensified its efforts to restore forest landscapes, with the national tree-planting campaign gaining unprecedented momentum. On June 1, 2026, Public Primary School Hêkandji in Tori-Bossito hosted the 42nd edition of the National Tree Day, serving as the official launch of the 2026–2027 reforestation initiative.

Young voices for environmental stewardship

This year’s observance, themed “Children, Forest Ambassadors Committed to a Verdant Benin”, unfolded simultaneously across all twelve departments. The event underscored a strategic shift: empowering the younger generation as frontline advocates for climate action and ecological preservation.

A unified call to action

The celebration brought together political leaders, forestry officials, local representatives, development partners, and community members in a show of collective resolve. Their shared objective: reversing land degradation and ensuring the sustainable restoration of the country’s vegetative cover. The decision to host the national launch in a school setting was deliberate, reflecting the government’s commitment to fostering eco-citizenship from an early age. By entrusting schoolchildren with the role of Forest Ambassadors, the initiative positions youth as custodians of newly planted saplings and catalysts for environmental awareness in their neighborhoods.

Rebuilding resilience through reforestation

As climate-induced challenges intensify across West Africa, the upcoming reforestation drive assumes critical importance. While the symbolic act of planting saplings on June 1 marked the campaign’s launch, authorities emphasized the equally vital task of post-planting care and maintenance. Local community engagement and robust technical and financial partnerships will be pivotal in ensuring the survival and growth of young trees.

Through this 42nd observance, Benin reaffirms its dedication to international commitments on combating desertification, demonstrating that ecological transition is not a distant goal but an immediate priority—one championed by a generation ready to shape a greener tomorrow.
