Cameroon dismantles massive human trafficking ring with over 600 victims

Following an extensive investigation triggered by widespread reports of online fraud and abductions of relatives abroad, the Central Judicial Research Service of the National Gendarmerie launched an operation on May 16, 2026.

Operation uncovers sophisticated criminal network

A comprehensive investigation has led to the dismantling of a major human trafficking network operating under the guise of multi-level marketing schemes linked to QNET, IGNITE, and UNIMEC. The operation resulted in the arrest of 13 individuals, including six primary coordinators within Cameroon and seven active intermediaries or representatives. Authorities identified more than 600 victims who were recruited and multiple properties used as operational bases and housing across several cities, including Douala, Bafoussam, Ebolowa, Kye-Ossi, Bertoua, Ngaoundéré, Maroua, Garoua, and Yaoundé.

According to Colonel Atangana Fiacre Kisito, Deputy Central Director of Coordination and Director of Employment and Structures, the masterminds—based in Malaysia with active branches in West and Central Africa—targeted vulnerable youth, job seekers, students, and those aspiring to emigrate. Their tactics involved enticing victims with promises of overseas employment or training, high-yield investments with no risk, and aggressive recruitment tactics.

Once recruited, victims were subjected to exorbitant fees and confined in group dormitories under strict control. Some southern victims were transferred through Garoua to Nigeria, while foreign nationals, particularly from Chad, were integrated into local networks in Yaoundé, specifically in neighborhoods like Awae, Tam-Tam, Mvan, and Nkozoa.

Public urged to remain vigilant against deception

In light of the operation’s findings, authorities are urging the public to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to deceptive online job offers, enticing business propositions, or persuasive pitches from acquaintances. The investigation is ongoing, with efforts focused on locating two additional suspects identified in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Central African Republic. The accused will be presented before the Prosecutor of the Republic at the Yaoundé Court of First Instance in the coming days.
