Mali intensifies hunt for terror network leaders with bounties

The Malian government has escalated its efforts to dismantle militant networks operating within its borders by announcing substantial financial rewards for the capture or elimination of top jihadist and rebel commanders.

Among those targeted is Iyad Ag Ghaly, a former Tuareg rebel and diplomat who now leads the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), formed in 2017. Ag Ghaly stands as the most wanted figure across the Sahel region, facing United Nations sanctions, inclusion on the U.S. terrorist list, and an International Criminal Court (ICC) arrest warrant for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity.

The announcement follows a series of devastating coordinated attacks on April 25 and 26, attributed to JNIM fighters in alliance with the predominantly Tuareg Azauad Liberation Front (FLA). These assaults struck critical military positions nationwide, including the death of Defense Minister Sadio Camara, a central figure in Mali’s transitional government, in a suicide bombing.

Rewards offered for key figures in militant groups

Government officials revealed that bounties have been placed on the heads of six individuals, including:

  • Amadou Kouffa, a senior JNIM commander, with a reward of €2.2 million;
  • Alghabass Ag Intalla, a high-ranking FLA leader;
  • Bilal Ag Cherif, another influential FLA figure.

The Ministry of Security and Civil Protection stated in a televised statement that the incentives aim to incentivize credible intelligence leading to the arrest or elimination of these individuals. The communiqué emphasized their alleged roles in orchestrating attacks that have destabilized national security and endangered civilians.

Decade-long insurgency fuels ongoing crisis

Mali has grappled with a severe security crisis since 2012, driven by violence from groups like JNIM, the Islamic State, and local criminal factions. The government’s latest move underscores its determination to curb terrorism and restore stability amid escalating threats.
