Senegal’s political landscape is heating up as the newly formed government faces its first major scrutiny. At the center of the debate is the appointment of Me Moussa Sarr as Minister of Justice, a decision that has drawn sharp criticism from Ousmane Sonko, leader of the Pastef movement.

Sonko’s reservations stem from the perception that Sarr’s involvement in past legal cases could reignite tensions between Pastef and key judicial institutions. While the opposition leader has not yet issued a final verdict, he has made it clear that his party will be watching the new minister’s actions closely.

« The selection for the Justice portfolio does not inspire confidence, » Sonko stated in a recent address. « This individual has been a central figure in several legal matters that have strained relations between our movement and the courts. » The leader emphasized that Pastef would reserve judgment until concrete actions are taken by the new minister, though skepticism within the party remains high.

Beyond the Justice Ministry, Sonko also targeted Prime Minister Al Amine Lô, questioning his commitment to a technocratic role. Accusing Lô of straying into political maneuvering rather than focusing on governance, Sonko warned against overreach.

« As someone chosen for his expertise, he should stick to his mandate, » Sonko asserted. « I’m aware of certain actions he’s taken, and I’ve been patient thus far. But pushing the boundaries would be unwise. »

The Pastef leader also addressed party members who joined the government, singling out Balla Moussa Fofana, Ibrahima Sy, and Yankoba Diémé. Accusing them of acting independently without consulting the party, Sonko hinted at future consequences for these individuals.

« Those who are in the government are there on their own accord, » he warned. « Their status will be addressed in due course. »

These early criticisms signal growing unease within the political sphere as Senegal’s new administration navigates its first days in office.
