Government Official Slams Allegations of Victimization Against President Faye
The Minister of Communication, Yankhoba Diémé, has publicly addressed the escalating political tensions between President Bassirou Diomaye Faye and former Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko. In a candid interview, he dismissed claims of victimization orchestrated by Sonko while firmly backing the head of state on multiple critical matters.
Diémé criticized what he described as a deliberate strategy to portray the former prime minister as a victim, stating that such tactics ultimately distort public perception. « This narcissistic approach and accumulated misconduct ultimately cast the victim as the aggressor, » he argued, warning that these maneuvers aim to undermine President Faye’s credibility.
Compensation Delays: Government Denies Allegations Against President Faye
Addressing delays in compensating former detainees, Diémé refuted accusations blaming President Faye for the holdup. « Claims suggesting the president is responsible for the non-payment of compensations are baseless, » he asserted. « During a Council of Ministers session, the president issued clear directives to the Prime Minister and the Minister responsible for Family Affairs to expedite the process. »
The minister also challenged narratives surrounding Ousmane Sonko’s salary donation. While Sonko announced he had redirected his four-million-CFA salary to victims, Diémé emphasized that this gesture should not overshadow the state’s responsibility in addressing their needs.
Political Funds Controversy: A Call for Accountability
Highlighting the political funds held by the Prime Minister’s office, Diémé revealed that 1.77 billion CFA francs were available. « Had these funds been used appropriately, thousands of victims could have received compensation sooner, » he noted, presenting financial simulations to support his argument.
Constitutional Reform: Accusations of Legislative Manipulation
On the subject of recent constitutional amendments, Diémé condemned what he termed a « parliamentary swindle », arguing that political actors had distorted the spirit of the national dialogue initiated by the president. « The president urged inclusive dialogue, yet some resorted to underhanded parliamentary maneuvers, » he stated.
Former President Macky Sall: Legal Framework Respected
Responding to criticism over former President Macky Sall’s presence in Senegal, Diémé defended President Faye’s stance, emphasizing that the head of state is acting within his constitutional rights. « The president’s actions align with legal provisions. Macky Sall enjoys no judicial accusations or proceedings, and Senegalese law strictly regulates any potential legal action against former presidents, » he explained.
He cautioned against unfounded accusations, stressing that only deputies can initiate high treason proceedings. « Accusing without evidence and then presenting oneself as a hero is not a path to progress, » he remarked, adding that if Macky Sall provides necessary clarifications, a meeting with President Faye would be entirely plausible within the bounds of republican principles.
