Celebrating 50 years of sino-nigerien medical cooperation at Niamey’s general reference hospital

On March 25, 2026, the Nigerien Minister of Health and Public Hygiene, Colonel-Major Doctor Garba Hakimi, presided over a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the Chinese medical team’s presence in Niger. For half a century, successive Chinese medical teams have served the Nigerien people with professionalism, expertise, and unwavering dedication.

Strengthening health systems and improving access to care

In his address, Colonel-Major Doctor Garba Hakimi commended the Chinese medical team’s discipline, commitment, and high standards of care. Their collaboration has significantly enhanced Niger’s health infrastructure and expanded access to medical services for local populations. During the event, a donation valued at approximately 99 million Central African francs—comprising medicines and medical supplies—was officially received for the Niamey General Reference Hospital.

Highlighting the impact of this cooperation, the minister emphasized its contributions across multiple areas: patient care, health worker training, knowledge transfer, and the introduction of advanced medical techniques. These efforts have benefited thousands of Nigerien patients, improving health outcomes nationwide. He also expressed deep appreciation for China’s long-standing role as a key partner in Niger’s health development, stating, “We hope this collaboration continues to flourish, delivering even greater benefits to our people in the years ahead.”

From Guangxi to Niger: a legacy of care and friendship

The Chinese Ambassador to Niger, His Excellency Lyu Guinjun, reflected on the half-century partnership, noting that the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region has dispatched nearly 800 skilled doctors and nurses to Niger. Working alongside Nigerien colleagues, they have treated approximately 1.8 million patients, embodying the spirit of sino-nigerien friendship. The ambassador highlighted China’s vision of a “community of shared health for all mankind,” a concept widely embraced by the international community. He also pointed to China’s recently adopted 15th Five-Year Plan, which includes provisions to deepen health coordination between China and Niger.

A lasting impact on Niger’s health sector

Mr. Du Zhenzong, Head of the Guangxi Health Commission delegation, underscored the broader significance of Chinese medical teams beyond clinical care. He described them as ambassadors of sino-african friendship, noting that over 50 years, they have provided medical services to 2.3 million people, trained over 45,000 health professionals, and fostered deep ties with local communities. Their legacy includes a sustainable contribution to Niger’s health system and improved well-being for its people.

The Director-General of Niamey’s General Reference Hospital, Mr. Daou Mamane, echoed these sentiments in his welcoming remarks. He praised the Chinese teams for their decades-long support in elevating Niger’s health conditions and acknowledged the donated medicines as a vital boost to the hospital’s operations and the national health system. He assured donors that all supplies would be distributed according to established protocols to maximize community benefit.

To conclude the ceremony, Colonel-Major Doctor Garba Hakimi presented symbolic gifts to the Chinese medical team and signed a new partnership agreement between Niger and China, reinforcing the enduring bonds of cooperation.
