The national carrier Air Sénégal has officially taken delivery of a brand-new Boeing 737-800, named “Gorée.” Announced on September 7, 2026, in Dakar, this strategic acquisition represents a significant milestone in the airline’s fleet modernization and the country’s ongoing pursuit of complete aviation sovereignty.
This major investment was made possible through the financial backing of the Senegalese state, channeled through the Ministry of Land and Air Transport under the leadership of Abdoul Ahad Ndiaye. Driven by the vision of President Bassirou Diomaye Faye, this initiative reflects Senegal’s determination to establish a strong national airline capable of supporting its global, economic, and tourism ambitions.
Enhancing regional and international connectivity
The newly acquired aircraft belongs to the highly versatile Boeing 737 NG family, a single-aisle model renowned for its efficiency on short and medium-haul routes. It will provide the national carrier with much-needed capacity to expand its flight network. The cabin is configured in a two-class layout, offering a total of 174 seats: 12 in Business Class and 162 in Economy Class, all fitted with high-quality Recaro seating. Physically, the aircraft measures 39.5 meters in length with a wingspan of 35.8 meters, and includes three galleys and three lavatories.
A flying ambassador of Senegalese heritage
The decision to name the aircraft “Gorée” carries deep historical significance. As a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1978 and a prominent memorial of the transatlantic slave trade, the island of Gorée stands as a powerful global symbol of memory, resilience, and reconciliation. Air Sénégal intends for this aircraft to act as a “flying ambassador,” carrying this symbolic heritage across Africa and the globe while strengthening ties with the Senegalese diaspora.
Beyond its symbolic value, this addition to the fleet is set to play a crucial role in boosting Senegal’s tourism sector by making the country more accessible to international visitors. By integrating this aircraft, the airline aims to achieve several key strategic objectives: increasing operational capabilities, supporting long-term growth, securing national air sovereignty, and elevating the overall travel experience for passengers.
