Arsenal, England’s reigning league champions, will step onto the pitch this Saturday, May 30th, in pursuit of football immortality. For the second time in the club’s history, the Gunners will compete in the UEFA Champions League final, 20 years after their heartbreaking defeat to FC Barcelona in Paris. Their opponents in Budapest? The reigning champions, Paris Saint-Germain, in a match that could deliver the London-based club’s first-ever European Cup—and a historic Premier League-Champions League double.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta is carried by players celebrating their Premier League title after the match between Crystal Palace and Arsenal in London, England, on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

Twenty years ago, on May 17, 2006, the tears flowed freely in Stade de France. The Arsenal side of Arsène Wenger’s Invincibles—undefeated in the league that season—faced a crushing defeat against FC Barcelona in the Champions League final. For two decades, that moment has haunted the club. Bernie, a lifelong Arsenal supporter, was there. “It feels like an eternity since that night in Paris. Back then, we all believed it was the start of a golden era for Arsenal. Even as we reached the quarterfinals in the years that followed, we never managed to win the competition. Now, as we prepare for Budapest, the anticipation is overwhelming.

Two decades of rebuilding, a change of stadium, doubts, and even ridicule followed. For an entire generation of Gunners, glory was confined to black-and-white memories. But those days are behind them now. The man who has reshaped Arsenal’s identity and taught them how to win again is at the helm: manager Mikel Arteta.

“Twenty years of waiting — and now it’s here”

At The George, a pub in North London, two eras coexist every matchday. Older supporters pass the torch to those too young to remember 2006. Pierre-Antoine, born in 2006, is part of the new generation. “I’ve waited my whole life for this. The Invincibles inspired me to fall in love with football, but I was too young to truly understand what was happening. Now, with my father, we can finally live this moment together. It sends shivers down my spine just to talk about it. No matter what happens, this season has already been incredible.

Twenty years later, the red-and-white jerseys are back in a Champions League final, ready to erase the ghosts of 2006 and crown a new chapter in Arsenal’s storied history.
