Benin and Niger strengthen bilateral ties during high-level Niamey visit
The leaders of Benin and Niger have reaffirmed their commitment to deepen cooperation in security and economic development during a landmark meeting in Niamey.
The President of Benin, Romuald Wadagni, paid an official friendship and working visit to Niamey on June 2, 2026. His arrival at Diori Hamani International Airport was marked by a warm welcome from his Nigerien counterpart, General Abdourahamane Tiani, reflecting the strengthening ties between the two nations.
Following the formal welcoming ceremony, the heads of state held a private meeting at the Presidential Palace in Niamey. This was followed by an extended session with delegations from both countries, focusing on shared priorities and regional challenges affecting Benin and Niger.
A joint statement released after the visit highlighted the deep historical bonds and mutual cooperation between Benin and Niger. Both leaders emphasized their dedication to reinforcing bilateral relations to address the security and development needs of their citizens.
Security concerns took center stage during discussions. With ongoing terrorism threats across the Sahel and West Africa, the presidents pledged to strengthen collaboration in combating cross-border crime and terrorism. At the end of the visit, President Tiani expressed his appreciation to President Wadagni for the official visit, while Wadagni commended the warm reception. The Beninese leader extended an invitation to his Nigerien counterpart for an official return visit, which was accepted.
