The inauguration ceremony in Benin began with the solemn announcement of the presidential election results by the Constitutional Court, which presided from a specially arranged podium. Moments later, the nation’s attention turned to the highly anticipated oath-taking moment.

Romuald Wadagni stepped forward, dressed in a dark suit with a navy-blue tie, his right hand raised as he took the presidential oath. With a clear voice, he pledged to « uphold and defend the Constitution », accepting the legal consequences of any breach. The ceremony was marked by a traditional salute of twelve cannon blasts, followed by his official proclamation as Grand Master of the National Orders. The Chief of Staff then ascended the stage to present him with the national flag.

In his inaugural address, Wadagni emphasized his commitment to serving Benin with unwavering integrity, courage, and dedication. He vowed to uphold the rule of law and protect fundamental freedoms, while promising inclusive economic growth that would benefit every household. On national security, he declared that Benin would remain resolute against any threat, particularly terrorism.

International presence and regional cooperation

The event, held on the grand esplanade of the Palais des Congrès, drew high-profile attendees. Former Beninese Presidents Nicéphore Soglo and Thomas Boni Yayi were among those seated in the front rows. Sixteen foreign delegations were also present, including representatives from neighboring countries such as Togo, Nigeria, Burkina Faso, and Niger—where relations with Benin have faced recent tensions.

Wadagni addressed the audience, expressing gratitude for the presence of regional leaders and reaffirming his dedication to deepening cross-border collaboration. « We are bound together by shared challenges and opportunities, » he stated, underscoring the necessity of collective action for regional stability.
