In a bid to foster civic responsibility and social cohesion among young leaders in eastern Côte d’Ivoire, a capacity-building workshop was held last Saturday in Bondoukou. The event, organized by the National Youth Council of Côte d’Ivoire (CNJCI) in the Gontougo region, brought together local youth leaders, association heads, and representatives from student organizations.
Building responsible youth leadership in a politically sensitive climate
The workshop, themed « Engaging youth associations and leaders in politics: what role to play? », aimed to equip young leaders with the tools needed to navigate political challenges while promoting peace and national unity. The event underscored the critical need for youth involvement in public life, provided it remains guided by integrity and constructive dialogue.
Alexis Adjoumani Kouadio, CNJCI’s regional delegate in Bondoukou, emphasized the importance of youth organizations serving as pillars of civic engagement and trusted partners in state-led initiatives. « The CNJCI exists to bridge the gap between young people and public institutions. Leaders must understand their duties and set an example for the rest of society, » he stated. He stressed that youth associations should remain neutral spaces for dialogue, fostering civic values rather than succumbing to political polarization.
A call for dynamic and neutral youth leadership
Kouacou Désiré, regional director of the Ministry of Youth, Vocational Integration, and Civic Service in Gontougo, highlighted the need for leaders who can energize their organizations without compromising neutrality. « Being an association president is not enough. True leadership lies in mobilizing young people, driving meaningful projects, and contributing to community development, » he remarked.
The workshop also focused on strengthening organizational management skills, conflict resolution, and strategies to prevent political manipulation within youth movements. Participants engaged in interactive sessions, including a panel discussion on navigating political pressures and a keynote on the role of associations in civic life.
Regional officials rally behind youth-driven development
Representing the regional prefect of Gontougo, Hugues Gnaihi praised the initiative, calling youth a « priceless asset » for national progress. « Young people are the driving force behind social cohesion, peace, and active citizenship. This workshop equips them to become architects of stability and progress, » he said.
The event concluded with the official launch of the CNJCI’s local chapter in Bondoukou, attended by grassroots youth leaders, association representatives, and students committed to civic and community leadership.
