The Burkina Faso and Serbia are stepping up their bilateral relations, with a focus on defense, security, and training. On Wednesday, June 3, 2026, a delegation of Serbian lawmakers led by Slavenko Ristic, head of the Defense and Security Commission of the Serbian Parliament and CEO of the defense technology firm Tehnicki Remont Bratunac, held discussions with Burkina Faso’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Regional Cooperation, and Burkinabè Abroad, Karamoko Jean Marie Traoré, and Deputy Minister Bêbgnasgnan Stella Eldine Kabré/Kaboré in Ouagadougou.

During the meeting, the Serbian delegation explored avenues for enhanced cooperation, with both sides highlighting significant untapped potential. Ristic praised Burkina Faso’s current direction under President Ibrahim Traoré’s leadership, stating, “The vision of the President of Faso resonates strongly in my country and commands great respect.”

Ristic emphasized Serbia’s eagerness to strengthen its ties with Africa, declaring, “Africa is the future, and we are determined to be part of it.” He added that his country seeks to deepen its engagement on the continent, particularly in sectors aligned with Burkina Faso’s strategic priorities.

Minister Traoré welcomed this initiative, noting it reflects Serbia’s growing interest in Burkina Faso and West Africa as a whole. He stressed that both nations stand to benefit from expanded collaboration, especially in areas where mutual strengths can be leveraged. “We are actively seeking partners to build mutually beneficial partnerships,” he remarked.

The Burkinabè diplomat also outlined Burkina Faso’s policy of diversifying international alliances, with a strategic focus on Eastern European countries. He urged the Serbian delegation to help bridge understanding between African realities and European policymakers, fostering a more balanced and equitable cooperation framework.

In response, Ristic committed to amplifying Burkina Faso’s voice within European decision-making circles, advocating for a fairer distribution of cooperation benefits between Europe and Africa.
