chadian opposition leader succès masra’s sentence upheld by supreme court
Chad’s Supreme Court, on Thursday, May 21, dismissed the appeal filed by Succès Masra, a former Prime Minister and the prominent leader of the “Les Transformateurs” party. This decision definitively upheld his 20-year prison sentence, immediately triggering widespread indignation and profound disappointment among his dedicated supporters.
In an official statement, Les Transformateurs asserted that Chadian justice “missed a historic opportunity” by affirming the verdict originally handed down against their president last year.
The party vehemently condemned the trial’s distinctly political nature, emphasizing that this ruling by the Supreme Court “reaffirms the profoundly political dimension of President Masra’s arbitrary detention, now spanning 371 days.” They contend this move is designed to sideline a leading opposition figure from the national political arena.
Furthermore, the opposition party criticized the judiciary for disregarding numerous international calls that had emerged globally, demanding Masra’s release, condemning the perceived injustice, and advocating for fundamental rule of law principles. Supporters of the former Chadian Prime Minister also expressed significant apprehension regarding his health, which they claim has “considerably deteriorated.”
Masra had been found guilty of criminal association and complicity in murder following the tragic Mandakao massacre, which occurred in May 2025 within the Logone Occidental province. With all national legal avenues now exhausted, the opposition leader’s legal team is reportedly considering taking the case to international courts.
