During a high-level security council meeting at the Presidential Palace, President Alassane Ouattara reviewed the nation’s security landscape, with particular focus on the progress achieved in combating illegal gold mining. The session, held in July 2026, highlighted the impactful results delivered by the Special Task Force Against Illegal Gold Mining (GS-LOI), established in 2021.
Over the past five years, the GS-LOI has successfully dismantled more than 8,500 illegal gold mining sites across Côte d’Ivoire. The crackdown also led to the arrest of 4,474 individuals, with foreign nationals accounting for 65% of those detained. Authorities seized over 960 million FCFA in cash and approximately 136 kilograms of gold. In addition, numerous machines and tools used in illicit mining operations were confiscated and destroyed.
Despite these significant strides, the National Security Council noted that illegal gold mining persists and even expands in certain regions, posing ongoing challenges to national stability.
Environmental and economic threats fuel intensified response
The Council underscored that illegal gold mining continues to undermine Côte d’Ivoire’s environment, natural resources, economic stability, and overall security. In response, President Ouattara directed Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé to escalate enforcement measures and implement stricter oversight.
Key strategies include strengthening accountability among administrative, traditional, and customary authorities, as well as defense and security forces. Local security committees and civil-military units—both operating under prefectural leadership—are being reinforced to enhance surveillance and intervention capabilities.
Enhanced collaboration with diplomatic missions from countries of origin for foreign miners is also a priority. This coordinated effort aims to boost awareness campaigns and streamline the repatriation of individuals involved in illegal mining activities.
Legal and operational measures to tighten control
The Prime Minister has been tasked with presenting a comprehensive proposal to the Council of Ministers to strengthen the national framework against illegal gold mining. This includes stricter enforcement of existing laws targeting both individuals and entities engaged in the practice.
The GS-LOI and supporting defense units will receive increased operational resources to improve coordination and response effectiveness. These measures reflect the government’s commitment to protecting Côte d’Ivoire’s natural heritage, environment, and long-term economic growth.
