From September 24 to 26, 2026, the Parc des Expositions in Abidjan will be the stage for the inaugural Africa Space Expo (ASPEX). This major continental gathering is dedicated to the satellite technology sector and the broader space economy. Led by Tidiane Ouattara, a space science expert at the Commission of the African Union and the event’s General Commissioner, ASPEX aims to become the premier African platform for innovation, industrial cooperation, and commercial opportunities.

“Space is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity,” stated Tidiane Ouattara. He pointed out that space-based technologies are now vital for strategic areas such as national security, natural resource management, telecommunications, precision agriculture, and disaster mitigation.

Drawing inspiration from prestigious international events like the Paris-Le Bourget air show or technological forums in Dubai, the Africa Space Expo intends to bring together scientists, industrial players, investors, and political leaders to build structural partnerships. The General Commissioner clarified that the objective extends beyond simple technological demonstrations to creating real business deals and strategic alliances for the continent.

Organizers estimate the African space market to be worth nearly $30 billion, or more than 16,683 billion FCFA. This represents a massive potential that African nations have yet to fully exploit. Through ASPEX, Côte d’Ivoire seeks to establish itself as a credible and influential player in this expanding global industry.

Space technology at the heart of digital transformation

During the presentation, Djibril Ouattara, the Minister of Digital Transition and Technological Innovation, reminded the audience that satellite infrastructure is already part of everyday life. Whether through GPS navigation, mobile money transfers, or web access, space technology is integrated into daily routines.

The Minister also highlighted how these technologies are crucial for Côte d’Ivoire’s digital evolution, particularly in boosting connectivity in rural areas, improving agricultural yields, and optimizing public services. He called upon African startups and developers to harness satellite data to create innovative solutions tailored to local challenges.

A strategic pillar for scientific development

Adama Diawara, the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research, described the space sector as a fundamental pillar for 21st-century economic and security development. He emphasized the urgent need to develop a critical mass of local talent by strengthening university programs and scientific research in satellite applications.

He also commended the Agence Spatiale de Côte d’Ivoire for its efforts in organizing the national space ecosystem and coordinating various initiatives. This first edition of ASPEX will gather numerous space agencies, governments, and financial partners from across the globe, with the United States and Morocco designated as guests of honor.

According to Tidiane Ouattara, this event marks a turning point in establishing a robust African space industry, providing a platform to mobilize investment and foster industrial synergies across the continent.
