Two men killed in military shooting near ORTM headquarters in Bamako
A tragic incident unfolded this morning in Bamako when two young men were fatally shot by Malian soldiers near the headquarters of the Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision du Mali (ORTM). The shootings occurred around 5:30 a.m. near the ultra-secure zone that also houses a major capital hotel.
Conflicting accounts emerge over the victims’ intentions
Military sources claim the men, riding a motorcycle, attempted to force their way through security checkpoints. However, local witnesses suggest the pair were seasonal laborers heading to their construction site, unaware of the tightened restrictions in the area.
Security measures around ORTM have been dramatically increased in recent weeks following coordinated attacks by Islamist militants in multiple locations across Mali, including Bamako. The military justified the shootings by stating the men ignored warning shots fired after allegedly breaching the first checkpoint.
Bamako residents divided over military response
Public reaction in the capital has been mixed. Some residents defend the soldiers’ actions, arguing that violating restricted zones during heightened security periods warrants severe consequences. “Everyone knows these areas are off-limits without authorization,” said one anonymous driver. “Ignoring security protocols could lead to fatal outcomes.”
Others, like local resident Seyba, question whether lethal force was necessary. “Why not aim at the motorcycle or disable the suspects without killing them?” he argued. “Now we’ll never know their true motives, even if they were suspected terrorists.”
Security reinforcements across Bamako
In response to the incident, authorities have further tightened security around the ORTM sector and military installations. Bamako-Sénou International Airport has also increased its surveillance, with access now strictly limited to travelers and authorized personnel.
The military has not released additional details about the victims or their alleged actions. Investigations are reportedly ongoing.
