The military partnership between Benin and France has reached a new milestone. On June 23, 2026, the 1st Engineering Battalion and the Centre for Post-Conflict Demining and Clearance Operations (CPADD) received a significant shipment of equipment to strengthen their fight against improvised explosive devices (IEDs). The official handover ceremony took place at the CPADD under the leadership of Colonel Jean Kouagou N’pina, with Colonel Gilbert Lossitode representing the Chief of Staff of the Beninese Armed Forces.

The equipment, provided by the French Republic, includes advanced IED detectors, disruptor cannons, portable jammers, specialized intervention vehicles, and cutting-edge technical gear. These tools are designed to enhance the detection, neutralization, and response capabilities of units operating in the northern regions, where IED threats have become increasingly frequent.

Lieutenant-Colonel Djimon Sahgui, Director of the CPADD, emphasized the critical role of the centre and the 1st Engineering Battalion in the current security landscape. He highlighted that the growing proliferation of IEDs demands continuous adaptation of operational methods and equipment. He also praised the robust and exemplary cooperation between Benin and France.

Lieutenant-Colonel Arnaud Ardillier, the French Defence Attaché in Benin, stated that this donation represents a tangible investment in the safety of Beninese military personnel and the protection of civilian populations. He particularly underscored the importance of portable jammers, now considered essential tools in IED neutralization operations. According to him, integrating these devices into the training programs of Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) specialists will significantly bolster the security of teams deployed in the field. This contribution will also enhance the technical capabilities of Beninese forces facing the evolving tactics of armed terrorist groups.

Colonel Gilbert Lossitode, who officially received the equipment on behalf of the Chief of Staff of the Beninese Armed Forces, expressed his gratitude to the French Republic. He described the initiative as an act of solidarity and a concrete commitment to national security. On behalf of the High Command, he thanked all partners involved in bringing this project to fruition, noting that the benefits will extend to improving the effectiveness of security operations, particularly within the framework of Operation Mirador.
