A significant declaration, delivered by Omar Zniber, Morocco’s Ambassador to the United Nations in Geneva, underscored the enduring political nature of the Sahara issue. Speaking on behalf of the supporting nations, Ambassador Zniber reiterated that this matter remains firmly within the political framework established by the United Nations and overseen by the Security Council.
The statement emphasized that the autonomy initiative put forth by Morocco represents a credible and pragmatic foundation for achieving a lasting political resolution to the ongoing conflict. It also reaffirmed strong backing for the implementation of Security Council Resolution No. 2797, which aims to reinvigorate the political process involving all relevant parties.
Nations endorsing the initiative also commended Morocco’s comprehensive autonomy proposal and its dedication to integrating residents of the Tindouf camps, ensuring their rights are upheld on par with all other citizens. Furthermore, they lauded Morocco’s collaborative efforts with United Nations human rights mechanisms, recognizing this as evidence of a proactive commitment to advancing and safeguarding fundamental rights and freedoms.
The declaration highlighted that the establishment of several countries’ consulates general in the cities of Laayoune and Dakhla serves as clear proof of the expanding international support for Morocco, fostering enhanced development, investment, and regional cooperation across its southern provinces. Concluding its address, the group stressed that resolving this conflict would significantly boost integration and progress throughout the African and Arab regions, contributing to pan-African development.
