Ligue 1 sanctions: Nantes to play first Ligue 2 match behind closed doors

The disciplinary board of France’s top football league has confirmed the 0-0 draw between Nantes and Toulouse while imposing further sanctions on the Canaries, who are now relocating to Ligue 2.

France’s Ligue 1 disciplinary committee has ratified the goalless draw between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC from the final matchday of the season. The decision came after reviewing the match report, which detailed the chaotic events that led to the game’s premature termination.

In addition to the confirmed scoreline, the committee handed down a series of sanctions against Nantes. The club will play its first home match in Ligue 2 behind closed doors. Furthermore, the Loire stand at the Stade de la Beaujoire will be closed for the next two fixtures as punishment for the behavior of its supporters.

The match on May 17 was halted when Nantes fans invaded the pitch and launched smoke bombs into the Stade de la Beaujoire. The disturbances occurred despite the club already being relegated to Ligue 2. Security forces intervened to restore order, but the prefect took the decision to definitively suspend the game for safety reasons. Stéphanie Frappart, the referee officiating the match, announced the abandonment in accordance with the prefect’s instructions.

As the club prepares to compete in France’s second tier, these sanctions mark a challenging start to their campaign. The closed-door match and partial stadium closure reflect the seriousness with which the league views supporter misconduct.
