Toulouse FC climbs to 9th place after Nantes match abandonment sanctions

  • Yann Gboho and Toulouse players now stand in 9th place, their best result since new investors took over

The Professional Football League (LFP) has finalized its decision on the abandoned match between FC Nantes and Toulouse FC (0-0) from the 34th and final Ligue 1 matchday. The game will not be replayed, and the *Violets* climb the standings following the ruling, which proved less favorable than anticipated.

The LFP, which oversees France’s top-tier football competitions including Ligue 1, issued a statement on May 27 to confirm the outcome of the abandoned game at Stade de la Beaujoire. While the match will not be replayed, the decision to uphold the scoreline at the time of abandonment (0-0) rather than awarding Toulouse a 3-0 forfeit victory came as a mild surprise.

This result propels Toulouse FC to 9th place, overtaking Lorient. With this draw, the *Violets* now have 45 points—matching Lorient’s tally—but surpass them on goal difference (3 vs. -1). This marks the club’s best-ever finish since RedBird Capital Partners acquired a stake in the team. The LFP’s decision prevents any setback for Toulouse, as even a 3-0 forfeit would not have allowed them to overtake Strasbourg, who sit 8th with 53 points.

“After reviewing the investigation report, the Commission has decided to definitively ratify the score recorded on the pitch at the moment of the definitive abandonment of the match (0-0).” With this concise statement, the LFP communicated its decision late on May 27. The ruling also included sanctions against FC Nantes for the pitch invasions and disturbances that marred the final matchday of Ligue 1.

Closed-door match, no sporting sanctions

Recall that supporters had hurled pyrotechnics onto the pitch, forcing the game’s abandonment after ultras—many masked—invaded the field. The unrest erupted as a protest against the club’s leadership following Nantes’ relegation. The LFP imposed the following sanctions: “one closed-door match at Stade de la Beaujoire, followed by the closure of the Loire stand for two additional games.” The disturbances originated from this very stand, home to the *Brigade Loire*, one of Nantes’ ultra groups. While Toulouse FC will begin their Ligue 2 campaign without fan support, they can consider themselves fortunate—sporting penalties, including point deductions, were a distinct possibility.
