The West African medical and research landscape is about to reach a historic milestone. Sorbonne University, a leading European academic and medical institution, is now turning its attention to Bénin. A high-level delegation from the French university, led by its president, visited the International Hospital of Calavi (CHIC) to explore this new flagship of Béninese public health.

This highly strategic visit outlines the shape of a promising alliance, aiming to bring the academic and hospital worlds closer together to boost healthcare provision and medical training in the subregion.

A world-class technical platform

Inaugurated to redefine health standards and drastically reduce medical evacuations abroad, CHIC impressed its guests. Built on over 40,000 square metres with a capacity of more than 430 beds, the centre incorporates cutting-edge imaging and treatment technologies, especially in medical oncology, radiotherapy and complex cardiology.

From exploring care units to the medico-technical hub, the European delegation observed the thoroughness of infrastructures complying with the strictest international standards.

“The shared ambition is to strengthen excellence in care, training and research for the benefit of Béninese and African populations.”

Towards tailor-made training and cutting-edge research

Beyond a mere courtesy visit, this meeting marks the start of an active exploration phase. The objective is clear: jointly design specialised training programmes that directly address CHIC’s advanced needs, while building on existing collaborations in Bénin.

By combining Sorbonne University’s academic expertise with CHIC’s technological potential, Bénin is not only equipping itself with a modern hospital; it is sustainably establishing a reference centre and a hub of attraction for tomorrow’s medicine on the African continent.
