The Nigerian army announced on Sunday that it had freed 360 people abducted by Boko Haram in southern Borno state, in the country’s northeast.

The operation took place in the Mandara mountains, part of the terrorist group’s stronghold, according to a military statement. Abuja is increasing pressure on jihadists; last month, Nigerian authorities said a joint operation with the United States had eliminated 175 ISWAP fighters.

Nigeria faces a severe security crisis, especially in its northern region, where over a decade of jihadist insurgency, combined with a rise in ransom kidnappings and illegal mining, continues to undermine regional stability.

The conflict in northeastern Nigeria has killed thousands and forced millions to flee their homes, according to the United Nations. Despite President Bola Tinubu’s repeated promises to end the insecurity, many analysts believe the measures taken remain insufficient to ensure the safety of the population.
