  • Paris Saint-Germain is set to play its rescheduled Ligue 1 Matchday 29 fixture against its closest challenger, RC Lens, this Wednesday, May 13th.
  • On this significant occasion, the capital club could clinch a historic fifth consecutive French championship title.

Is Paris Saint-Germain poised for a remarkable double? Already securing a spot in the Champions League final for the second successive year, the squad from Parc des Princes now has the opportunity to claim its first major trophy of the season this Wednesday, May 13th. With a commanding lead in the league standings at 73 points, the Parisian giants will travel to face Lens (kick-off 9 PM), who are enjoying an exceptional season themselves, holding a solid second place with 67 points, in this crucial postponed Ligue 1 matchday 29 encounter.

The capital club, pursuing its 14th overall Ligue 1 title and an incredible fifth in a row, stands on the brink of making further history. They could become only the third team in the 21st century to mathematically clinch the league championship against their eventual runner-up. This rare feat was previously achieved by Lyon against Lens in the 2001-2002 season and by PSG themselves against Monaco in 2017-2018.

A draw or victory will crown Paris Saint-Germain champions

To secure the coveted trophy as early as this Wednesday, Luis Enrique’s squad simply needs to avoid defeat. A draw at the Stade Bollaert-Delelis, a venue where the northern side has suffered only two losses this season, would be enough for PSG to celebrate. With 74 points, they would be mathematically out of reach for Lens (who would then have 68 points) before the final matchday on Sunday, May 17th. Similarly, a victory for the Parisians would also definitively seal the championship fate, establishing an even wider points gap.

Superior goal difference offers significant advantage

Conversely, to maintain even a slim hope of catching PSG, Lens must secure a victory on their home turf against a Parisian side currently grappling with several key injuries (Willian Pacho, Nuno Mendes, Warren Zaïre-Emery, Lee Kang-In, Achraf Hakimi, and Lucas Chevalier are all sidelined). Should Lens emerge victorious, Pierre Sage’s squad, whose coach was recently named Ligue 1’s Coach of the Year, would close the gap to three points, reaching 70 points. This would theoretically open a path for them to draw level on points on the 38th and final day, provided the stars align (including a PSG loss in the derby against Paris FC).

However, even this improbable scenario is unlikely to prevent Marquinhos and his teammates from lifting another title, thanks to their significantly superior goal difference (+44 compared to Lens’ +29). Goal difference is the decisive factor in case of a points tie. In essence, even a defeat this Wednesday would likely not derail Paris Saint-Germain’s championship aspirations, unless their rivals manage to overcome the substantial 15-goal difference separating the two clubs.

Parisian coach Luis Enrique, after his team’s 1-0 victory over Brest, acknowledged the situation. He stated, “We must acknowledge Lens’ performance throughout the season; they have played at an incredible level, making it very challenging for us,” but confidently added, “we are already champions, 99.9%.” The football world now waits to see if that percentage will officially hit 100% this Wednesday, or if the ultimate confirmation will extend to the final weekend of the competition.
