A true product of the club’s academy, Presnel Kimpembe navigated the challenges throughout Paris Saint-Germain’s Qatari Sports Investments (QSI) era. His journey culminated on a high note with a Champions League triumph. The Parisian native now shares how the transfer of Willian Pacho swiftly made him realize his time at the club was drawing to a close.

In 2024, Paris Saint-Germain made a significant investment, spending €40M to secure Willian Pacho from Eintracht Frankfurt. The intention was clear: the Ecuadorian international arrived in Paris to form a central defensive partnership with Marquinhos. This acquisition inevitably had a profound impact on Presnel Kimpembe, who also operates as a left-sided central defender. The former Parisian, now playing in Qatar, reflected on the precise moment when head coach Luis Enrique informed him of the club’s decision to sign another player for his position.

“Heartbreak, no. Not at all, because I knew I was nearing the end of my time. I always dedicated myself fully to succeeding and achieving my goals. The situation had become more complex, but that never deterred me from working hard, striving to return to my best level at the opportune moment. The story concluded in an absolutely incredible way with that Champions League victory. I would have preferred to depart as a genuine on-field contributor, but leaving with that trophy in hand was the ultimate way to express my gratitude to everyone,” he explained.

The defender, who came through the Paris Saint-Germain academy, also shared the subtle sense of frustration he experienced despite the Champions League triumph. “There was immense joy and happiness. Yet, internally, there was also a small measure of frustration. I would have loved to be one of the primary actors on the pitch. Even though I know I was a crucial figure within the squad and the club, winning without being on the field has a distinct flavor,” Presnel Kimpembe added.
