Just days after Ousmane Sonko was removed from the Prime Minister’s office and a new government head was appointed in Senegal, tensions with President Bassirou Diomaye Faye have escalated. Initial talks aimed at integrating leaders from the Pastef-Les Patriotes party into the incoming administration have collapsed. In a statement released on June 1 by the party’s Executive Committee (COMEX) and shared by Sonko on his Facebook page, Pastef officially declared that none of its officials will join the next government.

The communiqué highlights that multiple discussions took place in recent days between Pastef leaders and the Head of State to reach a consensus on the new cabinet’s structure. The party emphasized acting “in a spirit of responsibility” and in line with its governing bodies’ guidelines. A lengthy meeting on the morning of June 1 between Faye and Sonko revealed some areas of agreement, yet deep disagreements persisted regarding the role of the majority in shaping the executive branch.

Ongoing disputes over governance

Following the meeting, the Pastef COMEX reviewed the situation and proposed alternatives to the President, but none were accepted. Faced with this deadlock, the party decided to step back entirely from government formation. “Pastef-Les Patriotes will not participate in the next government nor be represented by any minister,” the statement confirmed.

This move could significantly reshape Senegal’s political landscape, especially as citizens await solutions to pressing economic and social challenges. Despite the breakdown in negotiations, Pastef extended “full success to the new team,” signaling its intent to continue operating from the National Assembly, where Sonko now serves as president. The coming days will reveal the broader implications of this latest political shift at the highest levels of Senegal’s government.
