Ousmane Sonko, who previously served as Prime Minister and now presides over the National Assembly, extended an invitation for political dialogue to President Bassirou Diomaye Faye on Tuesday. Despite significant differences between them, Sonko affirmed that his party, Pastef, has no intention of destabilizing the newly formed government.
Ousmane Sonko questions the government’s political foundation
In his initial public statement since his dismissal on May 22, Ousmane Sonko voiced strong criticisms regarding the new government appointed by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. Addressing a press conference in Dakar, the Pastef leader emphasized the gravity of national governance, stating, “A country is serious, a government is serious.” He contended that the executive body, established on Monday, lacks “any structured political legitimacy.” Sonko further asserted that the head of state must acknowledge the institutional power balance, given Pastef’s substantial control of the National Assembly, holding 130 out of 165 seats.
Pastef pledges support for the executive
Despite his strong criticisms, Ousmane Sonko guaranteed that his party would not seek to issue a vote of no confidence against the government. “If Pastef wished, this government could fall within 72 hours. However, we will not censure them. We intend to support them,” he declared. The President of the National Assembly underscored the vital importance of maintaining national stability, a crucial factor for reassuring investors and preventing another period of political uncertainty.
A plea for dialogue to ensure stability
Amidst the growing tensions between the two former political allies, Sonko issued a call for “intelligent and constructive political dialogue.” He urged, “We must prevent this nation from relapsing into the turmoil it has previously experienced,” alluding to the violent demonstrations that convulsed Senegal between 2021 and 2024. While condemning “provocations” targeting his supporters, he also appealed for calm among the youth, asserting that “it takes two to make peace.”
