The end of political theater and the dawn of national crisis

The era of dramatic manipulation and empty campaign slogans has reached its limit. We are now witnessing a profound national decline. As the National Delegate for political life within Guem Sa Bopp, I refuse to be a silent witness to the economic and social self-destruction that Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko is imposing on our Republic.

What this administration attempts to disguise as a “transparency operation” regarding alleged hidden debts is, in truth, the most significant reputational heist in the history of independent Sénégal. Driven by deep-seated political resentment and a desire to vilify his predecessors, Ousmane Sonko has sacrificed the Sénégal brand on the altar of international markets. By publicizing unverified figures before any legal validation, he has not audited the past; he has effectively sabotaged the future of our Nation.

From opposition rhetoric to failed statesmanship

Listening to him disclose sensitive data with the casualness of a street commentator, one might search for a cynical excuse. Perhaps he momentarily forgot he was no longer an opposition leader on a neighborhood stage, but the Prime Minister of the Republic of Sénégal. This “eternal opponent” syndrome—the inability to adopt the mantle of a statesman—has led to irreparable damage. When one holds the levers of power, every word carries a multi-billion dollar weight. His apparent misunderstanding of financial mechanisms has turned his rhetoric into a weapon of mass destruction for our economy.

For decades, through various democratic transitions, our country earned international credibility through impeccable financial diplomacy and a respected sovereign signature. In a single press conference fueled by bitterness, Ousmane Sonko trampled this sacred heritage. Claiming to the world that the Sénégalese state lied about its accounts is an act of hostility against the vital interests of the Fatherland. No responsible leader destroys their own country’s credit to harm former rivals.

The macroeconomic fallout and state amateurism

This political recklessness is already yielding dire consequences. International rating agencies have responded by downgrading Sénégal’s profile, making access to capital more difficult and discouraging investors. The current indicators paint a terrifying picture for our sovereignty:

  • Growth forecasts have plummeted from 6.7% to a mere 2.2%. More than four points of national wealth have vanished due to disastrous government communication.
  • The $1.8 billion IMF program has been suspended, plunging the country into an unprecedented crisis of confidence.
  • To fill the financial void created by its own actions, the government is turning to more expensive and high-risk borrowing methods.

An economy under siege: Business closures and unemployment

At Guem Sa Bopp, we believe in the power of private initiative and the talent of our entrepreneurs. However, the real economy is currently paralyzed. Business creation has dropped by over 30% as fear and uncertainty halt investment. The freezing of domestic debt payments has strangled SMEs, artisans, and the construction sector. Without cash flow, layoffs are accelerating. With unemployment already near 23%, thousands of Sénégalese are losing both their jobs and their dignity.

Even our academic institutions are not immune. Universities and training centers are suffering the consequences of a budget policy that sacrifices the future of our youth. The social toll is equally devastating. Data from the National Unique Register (RNU) shows a worrying rise in social vulnerability and poverty. Debt service now reaches 5,500 billion FCFA, limiting the state’s capacity to act and driving up the cost of living.

A call for national awakening

It is time for the people of Sénégal to see the reality. The narrative of “hidden debt” has become a convenient excuse to mask a total lack of concrete results. Unable to fulfill their promises, current leaders are governing while constantly looking in the rearview mirror. A great nation cannot be led by resentment, conspiracy theories, and political spectacles. Sénégal deserves better than constant improvisation.

Faced with rising poverty and a collapsing business environment, we must acknowledge the failure of this governance. The Jambaars of Guem Sa Bopp are rising today to defend rigor against amateurism and economic patriotism against sabotage. Our focus remains the national interest over petty political calculations.
