Senegal’s Patriotes africains du Sénégal pour le travail, l’éthique et la fraternité (Pastef) is set to hold its first elective national congress on June 6-7, 2026 in Dakar. The event will focus on electing the party’s new leadership, with a clear agenda: securing the future of a movement that has reshaped Senegalese politics in recent years.

The Haute autorité de régulation du parti (Harp) has just released the final list of approved candidates, revealing a predictable yet significant outcome. Ousmane Sonko, Senegal’s current Prime Minister and the party’s founder, stands unopposed as the sole candidate for his own succession. His leadership remains the cornerstone of Pastef’s vision for the coming years, as the party prepares to navigate critical electoral challenges ahead.

The Harp also announced that the candidacies of seven individuals were rejected for failing to meet the party’s stringent requirements. Among the reasons cited for their disqualification were incomplete application files—missing identification documents or membership cards—as well as procedural irregularities that could not be addressed after the May 20 deadline for submissions.

This congress isn’t just about leadership; it’s a strategic gathering to define Pastef’s political roadmap for the foreseeable future. With Senegal’s local elections in 2027 and the 2029 presidential race looming, the party is positioning itself to consolidate its influence and shape the nation’s agenda. Sonko’s unchallenged candidacy underscores the party’s confidence in his ability to lead them through these pivotal moments, ensuring continuity in their reformist agenda and grassroots-driven policies.
