A significant political development has unfolded in Senegal. President Bassirou Diomaye Faye made a dramatic move on Friday evening, dismissing his Prime Minister, Ousmane Sonko, along with the entire government, against a backdrop of escalating political tensions.

The presidential decree, announced on national television by Oumar Samba Ba, the Secretary General of the Presidency, stated that the outgoing ministers are now tasked with managing current affairs until a new administration is formed.
from political mentor to government rival
This decision signifies a remarkable split between the two prominent figures who had jointly ascended to power in 2024. Ousmane Sonko, having been legally barred from running in the presidential election, had famously endorsed Bassirou Diomaye Faye as his replacement candidate to challenge then-incumbent President Macky Sall.
Fueled by widespread popularity among Senegal’s youth and a compelling pan-Africanist message, Sonko played a pivotal role in securing the new leadership’s electoral triumph.
However, over recent months, growing friction between the head of state and his former political guide had become increasingly apparent.
sonko’s immediate response
Moments after the announcement of his dismissal, Ousmane Sonko took to Facebook, posting: “Alhamdoulillah. Ce soir je dormirai le cœur léger” (Tonight I will sleep with a light heart).
Subsequently, numerous videos circulated across social media platforms, depicting throngs of his supporters converging on his residence in Dakar, chanting his name in solidarity.
Sonko’s departure ushers in a period of significant political uncertainty for Senegal, particularly given that his party currently commands a substantial majority in the National Assembly following the legislative elections of November 2024.
