strengthening Mali’s healthcare system: strategies for better access

Mali launches the first health month to address inequities in healthcare access for vulnerable populations.

Children are particularly vulnerable to healthcare disparities in Mali

Mali’s healthcare system faces significant challenges, with unequal access to medical services disproportionately affecting children under five, pregnant women, and war-wounded individuals. The 2012 security crisis further strained an already fragile infrastructure, leaving many without essential care.

In response, Malian authorities have prioritized healthcare reform, launching the inaugural health month in November to expand access to medical services and social protection. This initiative aims to bridge gaps in healthcare delivery, particularly for the most vulnerable populations.

“Improving population health remains a government priority. I commend Minister Diéminatou Sangaré for this initiative, which provides a platform for dialogue between system actors and beneficiaries, clarifying roles and responsibilities.” stated Colonel Abdoulaye Maïga, Mali’s interim Prime Minister, during the launch.

The timing of this initiative is critical. Despite efforts to reduce preventable deaths and diseases, key health indicators remain alarming. Colonel Maïga highlighted pressing concerns: infant mortality stands at 54 deaths per 1,000 live births, 33% of births occur outside health facilities, and only 45% of children aged 12-23 months receive all basic vaccinations.

He further noted that one in three children under five suffers from stunted growth, and only 40% of infants under six months are exclusively breastfed. Additionally, widespread misinformation about health and social protection systems exacerbates access barriers, particularly in conflict-affected regions.

By addressing these systemic issues, Mali aims to build a more resilient healthcare system that ensures equitable care for all citizens, regardless of location or socioeconomic status.
