Fada N’Gourma — Polio is a severe yet entirely preventable disease, and mothers across Burkina Faso are taking decisive action to shield their children from vaccine-preventable illnesses. Their commitment not only safeguards individual health but also strengthens community resilience against dangerous outbreaks.

Nadège Thiombiano, a mother of 13-month-old Mouzaratou in Fada N’Gourma, understands this responsibility deeply. When she heard about the latest polio vaccination campaign, she prepared her daughter early to ensure full protection. To her, vaccination is both a maternal duty and a lifelong promise. « I’ve seen what polio does to children. As long as I live, none of my children will miss their vaccines, » she declares with conviction.

Nadège’s resolve stems from firsthand experience—witnessing the devastating effects of polio firsthand. Her trust in vaccination has led her to follow Burkina Faso’s full immunization schedule rigorously, including the polio vaccine. « Vaccination is life itself, » she says simply.

Community-driven vaccination drives in Burkina Faso

On November 7, 2025, health workers at the Centre de santé et de Promotion sociale (CSPS) Sector 09 sprang into action at dawn. During the four-day polio vaccination campaign (November 7–10), they successfully immunized 5,290 children aged 0 to 59 months—exceeding the target of 5,060 by over 104%. This outstanding result reflects strong parental engagement, dedicated vaccinators, and robust social mobilization.

André Yonli, Head Nurse at CSPS Sector 09, highlights the critical role of teamwork. « These numbers highlight the combined efforts of parents, health teams, and community mobilizers. » He emphasizes the importance of proactive advocacy, rapid problem-solving, and targeted outreach to underserved areas, including informal settlements and internally displaced persons’ sites. « Mobile teams reached remote zones through meticulous planning and continuous monitoring, » he notes.

To enhance outreach, health facilities received training in data management and interpersonal communication. Social mobilization sessions engaged religious leaders, traditional authorities, and civil society groups—especially women’s associations—to dispel myths and build trust in vaccines.

Real stories of change from Fada N’Gourma

Talato Lompo, a mother of four, once feared vaccines due to circulating rumors. « I thought vaccination would make my children sick, » she admits. But after consistent health education from community health workers, she gained clarity. « Now, my children rarely fall ill, and I’ve resumed their full vaccination schedule. » Her experience mirrors that of many parents who’ve overcome vaccine hesitancy through trusted information.

Adjaratou Ouoba, a community health volunteer, celebrates this shift. « Through awareness campaigns and social mobilization, mothers now recognize polio’s dangers and the value of vaccination. Parents like Nadège are taking proactive steps to protect their children, » she observes.

Sustained support from global health partners

Dr. Sandrine Bienvenue Sam, the Fada N’Gourma District Medical Chief, acknowledges the invaluable support from partners like the World Health Organization (WHO), which provided end-to-end technical and logistical assistance. « WHO facilitated vaccine transportation, team supervision, and data collection, » she explains. « Over 20 experts—epidemiologists, communication specialists, and administrators—were deployed on the ground to ensure flawless operations. »

The results speak volumes: over 134,000 children were vaccinated district-wide, achieving a coverage rate above 103%. This success solidifies Burkina Faso’s polio-free status since 2015 and reinforces its defenses against potential outbreaks.

For Nadège, these figures represent more than statistics—they reflect healthy, thriving children. As she holds her daughter close, she shares a heartfelt sentiment echoed by countless parents: « A vaccine is a small act, but it protects a lifetime. »

The fight against polio continues, and every parent plays a vital role in keeping Burkina Faso polio-free. By vaccinating their children, families preserve hard-won gains and pave the way for a future where polio is nothing more than a distant memory. Thanks to community dedication and partner support, every child in Burkina Faso can look forward to a healthy tomorrow.
