In a unified response to escalating food shortages and sociopolitical instability, Caritas networks across the Sahel are convening in Ouagadougou to strengthen regional emergency preparedness. The five-day strategy session, launched on February 19, brings together representatives from Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger and Sénégal—member countries of the Caritas Sahel platform, operational since 2007.
Building a regional crisis communication framework
The gathering focuses on developing a cohesive communication system to streamline emergency response efforts among Catholic aid organizations. Key participants include heads of information and emergency operations, who are working to establish standardized protocols for cross-border collaboration.
Focus on Mali’s humanitarian fallout
This initiative aligns with the Emergency Appeal 28/2012, designed to enhance the Caritas network’s capacity to address the severe humanitarian consequences of the Mali crisis. The project emphasizes proactive measures to mitigate risks and improve rapid response capabilities in the region.
Addressing the refugee crisis
With neighboring countries hosting nearly 300,000 Malian refugees, the need for coordinated action has never been more urgent. The discussions aim to ensure that displaced populations receive timely and effective support through shared resources and expertise.
Caritas Burkina’s Executive Secretary, Father Isidore Ouédraogo, highlighted the meeting’s goal: fostering a unified operational framework to bolster the collective resilience of Sahelian Caritas teams in the face of ongoing emergencies.
