Canary Islands Parliament honors Moroccan consulate’s contributions

Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, commends Fatiha El Kamouri for her four-year tenure as Consul General of Morocco, highlighting the strengthened institutional ties between Morocco and the Canary Islands under her leadership.

Astrid Pérez, President of the Canary Islands Parliament, met this Wednesday with Fatiha El Kamouri, Consul General of the Kingdom of Morocco in the Canary Islands, marking the conclusion of her four-year term at the helm of the consular representation. During this period, she played a pivotal role in strengthening institutional relations between Morocco and the Canary Islands.

In recognition of her dedicated service, Pérez expressed her gratitude to El Kamouri for her outstanding contributions. She also highlighted the importance of sustained dialogue and cooperation between the two institutions, wishing her success in her future professional endeavors.

Originally from the Sahrawi region, Fatiha El Kamouri arrived in the Canary Islands in 2022 after six years as Morocco’s Consul in Bilbao. During her tenure in the Basque Country, she was instrumental in fostering institutional relations and supporting the Moroccan community residing there.

The Canary Islands government, led by President Fernando Clavijo, has significantly bolstered its ties with Morocco in recent months. This strategic alignment reflects a deep understanding of shared security, stability, and economic benefits—particularly in key sectors such as water desalination, infrastructure management, and technological innovation.

Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara remains a cornerstone of this collaboration. By endorsing this proposal, the Canary Islands not only align with Spain’s diplomatic stance but also underscore the mutual benefits of regional stability and prosperity. This alignment is far from mere diplomatic courtesy; it reflects a pragmatic vision that prioritizes tangible outcomes over ideological divides.

Beyond high-level visits and the signing of collaboration agreements, concrete actions have solidified this partnership. A notable example is the recent reception of Karim Achengli, President of the Souss-Massa region, and over 80 business leaders in Las Palmas. This visit underscored the growing economic ties between the regions and translated political discourse into actionable initiatives.

The Canary Islands are now perceived as a natural partner for Morocco’s development, rejecting past attempts to create divisions between the two shores. This shift is evident in the thriving collaboration across strategic sectors, where the exchange of expertise and joint projects is fostering a shared vision of progress.

The achievements of the past years would not have been possible without the decisive contributions of Consul Fatiha El Kamouri. Her leadership has been instrumental in building bridges, fostering mutual understanding, and driving forward a partnership rooted in shared interests and long-term prosperity.
