Sonelgaz advances tri-fuel power project in N’Djamena to enhance Chad’s energy security
Chad’s energy landscape is set for a major transformation with the accelerated development of a 40-megawatt tri-fuel power plant in N’Djamena. Spearheaded by Algeria’s state-owned energy leader Sonelgaz, the project marks a new phase of strategic cooperation between the two nations. A high-level delegation led by Yazid Djellouli, CEO of Sonelgaz International, recently concluded a working visit to Chad’s capital to finalize technical specifications and operational timelines in partnership with Tchad-Elec.
The facility’s defining feature is its tri-fuel technology, enabling it to operate on natural gas, liquid fuels, or a combination of both. For N’Djamena—where power shortages remain a persistent challenge and demand continues to rise—this adaptability ensures a more resilient energy supply. The plant can dynamically adjust fuel sources based on availability, reducing reliance on any single input and improving overall reliability.
The collaboration extends beyond infrastructure. Sonelgaz will support Chad’s National Electricity Company (SNE) through hands-on training and technical assistance, strengthening local operational expertise. This knowledge-sharing initiative aims to build long-term self-sufficiency in power generation and maintenance, aligning with Chad’s broader goals of energy autonomy and economic resilience.
For Chad, the stakes are high. By diversifying energy partnerships and adopting flexible power solutions, the country is taking critical steps to curb costly fossil fuel imports while stabilizing its national grid. As this project moves forward, it sends a strong signal to investors and industry leaders: a reliable, modern energy infrastructure is becoming a reality in Chad—one that could unlock new opportunities for industrial growth and sustainable development.
