The Republic of Chad is set to make a historic leap in African diplomacy by opening its borders to all African nationals without visa requirements. Effective from January 1, 2027, citizens from every African country will be able to travel to Chad freely—a decision that underscores the nation’s commitment to continental unity and mobility.

During the opening ceremony of the African Water Forum in N’Djamena, President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno unveiled this groundbreaking policy in front of distinguished heads of state and global leaders. The announcement reflects Chad’s role as a pivotal hub connecting Africa’s diverse regions—bridging West and East, North and South—while reinforcing its reputation as a welcoming land of integration and shared humanity.

In his address, the President emphasized Chad’s deep connection to the continent’s vision of unity, stating: « We stand in Chad, a crossroads of Africa, where human encounters flourish, where bonds between regions are forged, and where our shared destiny as Africans is celebrated. »

The bold initiative, described as « a grand gesture of openness to all of Africa », positions Chad among a select group of African nations that have abolished visa requirements for fellow Africans. It aligns the country with pioneers like Benin, Togo, Rwanda, Ghana, Gambia, Seychelles, and recently Congo, which have taken similar steps to dismantle travel barriers across the continent.

By removing these restrictions, Chad not only enhances economic and cultural exchanges but also strengthens its identity as a nation rooted in hospitality and continental solidarity.
