The Minister of Spatial Planning, Urbanism and Housing recently shared the promising outcomes of his delegation’s visit to Baku, Azerbaijan. This mission centered around the 13th World Urban Forum (FUM13/WUF13), a pivotal international gathering. The results were presented during a cabinet meeting on Thursday, May 28, 2026, attended by various stakeholders involved in the mission.
Spearheaded by the Minister, the Chadian contingent included the First Deputy Mayor of N’Djamena, high-ranking officials from SOPROFIM, and representatives from UN-Habitat. Discussions at the forum primarily addressed critical issues such as housing provision, fostering sustainable urbanization, and building resilience in cities against the impacts of climate change.
According to the Minister, Chad’s presence at this global assembly significantly elevated its profile in urban affairs and allowed active participation in dialogues concerning the strategic development of African cities. A dedicated national pavilion also served as a showcase, highlighting Chad’s innovative initiatives in urban planning and housing sectors.
A major achievement stemming from this mission is the confirmed visit to Chad by the Executive Director of UN-Habitat, scheduled for September 9 to 11, 2026. This high-level visit aims to conduct an on-the-ground assessment of the nation’s urban landscape and review several proposed projects put forth by Chadian authorities.
The Minister also revealed that Chad has been selected as one of ten countries now eligible for the United Nations Green Fund, a milestone achieved with crucial support from Kenya. This breakthrough is set to unlock substantial funding avenues for urban resilience projects, particularly those focused on mitigating flood risks.
On the sidelines of the forum, productive discussions were held with Kenyan and Moroccan counterparts. These engagements explored the potential for new collaborations in areas like urbanization strategies, social housing programs, and the vital restructuring of informal settlements. Joint cooperation missions and experience-sharing initiatives between these partner nations are currently under consideration.
For the Minister, this mission has unveiled tangible prospects for Chad, poised to transform these emerging opportunities into impactful, foundational projects that will directly benefit the populace.
Through its active engagement at FUM13/WUF13, Chad unequivocally reiterated its steadfast commitment to fostering urban development that is inclusive, enduring, and robust, aligning perfectly with the overarching vision championed by the President of the Republic, Marshal.
