Abidjan — A distinguished panel of African economic experts and journalists has conferred honors upon several nations for their outstanding public policies and sectoral achievements at the 20th edition of the Builders of Africa’s Economy awards. The ceremony, held in Abidjan, spotlighted countries whose strategic initiatives have driven meaningful progress in economic growth and social development across the continent.
Celebrating excellence in public policy and sectoral performance
The Builders of Africa’s Economy platform, a pan-African initiative established in 2006, introduced a new category this year to acknowledge states that have made significant strides through well-designed public policies. Winners were selected based on rigorous criteria including the tangible impact of government strategies, economic performance, sectoral advancements, and contributions to regional integration.
Winners span key sectors driving continental progress
The awards recognized excellence across diverse industries vital to Africa’s development. The Democratic Republic of Congo was honored for its mining sector, the Ivory Coast for agriculture, the Seychelles for education, training, and employment, and Morocco for both health and pharmaceutical innovation. Other laureates included Egypt for infrastructure development, Kenya for technology and artificial intelligence, and Algeria for its energy policies.
Industrial and service sector leadership was celebrated in South Africa, while Tanzania was recognized for its thriving tourism and hospitality industry. Nigeria received accolades in the creative and cultural industries, and Morocco was also distinguished for environmental sustainability and green development initiatives.
Special awards were presented to Namibia for advancing gender equality and women’s empowerment, and to Ghana for fostering the return of the diaspora and strengthening regional integration. Morocco was further honored with the 20th Anniversary Special Prize for its comprehensive national transformation over the past two decades.
Visionary leadership highlighted as catalyst for change
Michel Russel Lohoré, founder of the Builders of Africa’s Economy platform, emphasized the initiative’s mission to showcase not only economic actors and enterprises but also the pivotal role of government policies and national visions in fostering sustainable economic progress across Africa.
Valentin Mbougueng, president of the independent jury and a renowned international affairs journalist, explained that the selection process incorporated rankings from international and regional organizations, as well as insights from specialized publications and on-the-ground expertise.
Honoring excellence at a landmark anniversary gala
The achievements of the award recipients will be celebrated during a gala event on June 18 in Abidjan, marking the 20th anniversary of the Builders of Africa’s Economy platform. Since its inception in 2006, the initiative has consistently recognized individuals, businesses, institutions, and investors who are committed to advancing Africa’s economic development.
