The Senegalese National Agency for Civil Aviation and Meteorology (ANACIM) has raised an alert for dangerous swells and strong winds set to impact the coastal regions of Senegal in the coming days. Maritime users and coastal communities are strongly advised to exercise maximum caution and adhere strictly to safety guidelines until May 16.

Dangerous swells warning for Senegal's coastline

What to expect along Senegal’s coastline

According to ANACIM, a powerful swell originating from the Northwest is expected to hit the Great Coast starting from Tuesday, May 12, at 03:00. The surge will then progress toward Dakar as early as Wednesday, May 13, at 01:00 and persist until Saturday, May 16, at 01:00.

In addition to the hazardous swells, strong Northerly winds will sweep across the Great Coast from Monday, May 11, at 23:00 through Wednesday, May 13, at 07:00, with gusts potentially reaching 40 km/h.

Potential impacts on maritime activities

The combination of these weather conditions poses significant risks, including:

  • Highly turbulent sea conditions
  • Challenges for navigation and fishing operations
  • Dangerous waves along the shoreline
  • Increased vulnerability for small boats and vessels

Safety recommendations for coastal communities

Given the severity of the forecast, ANACIM urges fishermen, maritime workers, and residents in coastal areas to prioritize safety by following official advisories without exception. Avoiding non-essential sea travel and securing vessels are strongly recommended during this period.
