Deadly assaults target Burkina Faso’s security forces

At least fifty soldiers and Volunteers for the Defense of the Homeland (VDP) were killed in coordinated terrorist strikes across Burkina Faso on July 4. The attacks, attributed to the Group for Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), an Al-Qaeda affiliate, struck targets in the northern, northwestern, and southwestern regions of the country. Multiple military camps were overrun, with militants seizing weapons and ammunition before retreating.

The first assault began at dawn near the town of Di in the Sourou province, where jihadists breached the military base after intense firefights. According to local reports, the attack resulted in the deaths of 23 soldiers and 11 VDP members. A video released by JNIM claimed their fighters had observed 22 fallen government forces before withdrawing from Di.

Additional strikes were reported in Dalan and Tiéré, located in the southwestern and central-western zones. These raids claimed the lives of at least 18 more soldiers, with witnesses confirming significant material damage in both locations. No civilian casualties were reported in these incidents, though several vehicles were set ablaze.

In the northern reaches of the country, jihadists targeted Thiou and Séguénéga, where no human losses occurred. Instead, militants set fire to multiple civilian vehicles, leaving behind a trail of destruction. Despite the scale of the attacks, neither military nor government officials have issued statements regarding the incidents.

The lack of official response has raised concerns among local communities, particularly as graphic footage of the assaults circulates on social media platforms. The JNIM’s claims of responsibility underscore the persistent threat posed by armed groups operating in Burkina Faso’s most vulnerable regions.
