The French football authorities have delivered their verdict. The National Directorate of Management Control (DNCG) has set strict financial limits for Olympique de Marseille and Olympique Lyonnais ahead of the upcoming Ligue 1 campaign.
Financial restrictions imposed on both clubs
In a decisive move, the DNCG has announced a cap on wage bills and transfer compensation fees for Marseille. The decision follows a thorough review of the club’s financial stability, which has been under scrutiny due to a challenging 2025-26 season. The Phocéens had already faced wage restrictions twice—in 2021 and again in 2023—highlighting persistent financial pressures.
Meanwhile, Lyon faces its own set of financial constraints. The DNCG has implemented a salary cap tied to the club’s restructuring budget following a change in ownership. This measure aims to stabilize the club’s finances amid its recent transition in leadership.
Lyon avoids relegation despite financial hurdles
In a separate announcement, the DNCG confirmed that Olympique Lyonnais will remain in Ligue 1 for the 2026-27 season. The decision comes as Michele Kang, the new majority shareholder, takes charge of the Rhône-based club. The ruling underscores the club’s ability to meet financial compliance standards while navigating ownership changes.
Marseille’s financial woes deepen with UEFA fine
The DNCG’s announcement arrives just days after Marseille was hit with a €10 million fine by UEFA for breaching financial fair play regulations. The club’s financial struggles have been compounded by underperformance on the pitch, leaving its future financial strategy under intense pressure.
The DNCG’s oversight reflects broader concerns about financial sustainability in French football, as both clubs face heightened scrutiny over their spending and revenue management in the coming season.
