The President of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo, arrived in Luanda on July 16, 2026, at the invitation of Angola’s President João Manuel Gonçalves Lourenço. The visit marks the DRC’s participation in the third edition of the high-level initiative “A Call for Peace, Ending Wars, and Upholding International Law.”

Global leaders unite in Angola to address peace and security challenges

This international gathering brings together Heads of State, African Union officials, United Nations representatives, religious leaders, academic experts, and youth delegates. The discussions center on peacebuilding, conflict prevention, reconciliation, and sustainable peace across regions facing instability. The DRC delegation emphasized the need for tangible actions rather than empty promises to turn peace commitments into reality.

Bilateral talks focus on regional security and cooperation

Prior to the summit, President Tshisekedi held a private meeting with President Lourenço to discuss bilateral relations and security concerns, particularly in the eastern DRC. The leaders reviewed the evolving security landscape and explored ways to strengthen regional stability.

The DRC currently holds the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council as of July 1, 2026. This role comes at a critical juncture, with escalating global crises and a pressing need to restore faith in multilateral institutions and international law.

The Luanda summit, organized by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC) in partnership with Angola’s government, runs from July 16–17, 2026. Its agenda highlights the power of women, youth, and sports as catalysts for peacebuilding and conflict resolution on a global scale.
