England’s World Cup campaign hit a stumbling block on Tuesday as they were denied victory by Ghana, settling for a 0-0 draw in their second Group L encounter. The result leaves both sides in strong positions to advance to the next phase of the tournament, but it proved a letdown for the Three Lions after their opening triumph over Croatia (4-2).
The Ghanaian side, fresh off a dramatic last-minute win against Panama (1-0) in their opener, came out with a clear counterattacking strategy designed to blunt England’s offensive firepower. Under a steady drizzle, the English attack struggled to create meaningful chances, with Ghanaian defenders swarming around Harry Kane and other key players whenever they threatened danger.
For the first time in this World Cup, neither team managed a single shot on target during the opening 45 minutes, as Ghana’s disciplined defensive structure frustrated England’s attempts to break through.
England’s head coach, Thomas Tuchel, had anticipated a tough test, noting that Ghana’s coach, Carlos Queiroz, brings extensive experience from coaching in the English Premier League, including spells as an assistant at Manchester United. Queiroz, making his fifth World Cup appearance as a manager, had clearly prepared his team to exploit England’s attacking vulnerabilities. Ghana’s forwards, Antoine Semenyo and substitute Prince Kwabena Adu, tested England’s backline with rapid counterattacks, keeping the Three Lions under pressure.
The closest England came to scoring was in the 86th minute, when Nico O’Reilly’s header rattled the crossbar, followed by Harry Kane’s follow-up attempt sailing over the top. Reflecting on the missed chance, Kane admitted, “I couldn’t quite control the ball properly. But I’ve been an attacker long enough to know that not every chance goes in—it’s part of the game, and I have to accept it.”
Ghana’s coach, Carlos Queiroz, praised his team’s execution of the game plan, stating, “I’m incredibly proud of how our players fought throughout the match, fully committing to the strategy we set out.”
