The Internazionale has completed a major coup on the transfer market by securing the services of Djed Spence from Tottenham Hotspur in a deal worth €35 million. The English full-back, who turns 26 soon, has officially returned to Serie A after passing his medical in Milan and receiving clearance from the Italian Olympic Committee (CONI).
Under the terms of the agreement, Spence has inked a long-term contract running until June 2031, with an annual salary of €2.5 million supplemented by performance-related bonuses. Tottenham will receive an immediate payment of €31.5 million, with an additional €3.5 million tied to future performance milestones and add-ons.
From Genoa to San Siro: A familiar face returns
This transfer marks Spence’s second chapter in Italian football, following a successful six-month loan spell at Genoa during the 2024 season. His adaptability and tactical intelligence impressed the Nerazzurri hierarchy, particularly under the guidance of Cristian Chivu, who values defensive versatility. Capable of operating effectively as either a right-back or left-back, Spence adds tactical depth to Inter’s defensive options.
The defender’s stock soared after his standout performances at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America, where he featured in all eight of England’s matches. His international profile was further cemented during the tournament, starting in the semi-final loss to Argentina and the third-place victory over France.
Tottenham’s changing landscape
Spence leaves Tottenham after 85 appearances, a journey that began with his €19 million move from Middlesbrough in July 2022. His departure coincides with Tottenham’s strategic reshaping of the squad, notably with the arrival of veteran left-back Andy Robertson on a free transfer. The former Liverpool captain is expected to provide competition and leadership in the defensive line.
England’s growing influence at Inter
Spence becomes the second English international to join Inter this summer, following the free signing of defender John Stones from Manchester City. The Milan-based club now turns its attention to the upcoming Serie A campaign, with their season opener against Monza scheduled for August 22 at the San Siro.
