On an official mission to Burundi, Floribert Anzuluni, the Democratic Republic of Congo’s Minister of Regional Integration, leading a Congolese delegation, was received this Wednesday, July 15, 2026, in Gitega by Burundian President Évariste Ndayishimiye, who also serves as the current Chairperson of the African Union. This significant meeting involved the delivery of a special and confidential message from President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi of the Democratic Republic of Congo to his Burundian counterpart.

Following a discussion lasting over an hour, the Congolese Ministry of Regional Integration confirmed that Floribert Anzuluni was received in his capacity as a special envoy for the Congolese Head of State.

According to President Tshisekedi’s emissary, the conversations primarily focused on strengthening bilateral relations between the two nations and addressing the prevailing security situation across the Great Lakes region, with a particular emphasis on eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. This reflects a key aspect of contemporary African politics.

“I had the honor of being received in audience by His Excellency President Évariste Ndayishimiye as a special envoy of His Excellency President Félix Tshisekedi. I delivered a special and confidential message from the President of the Republic. This message primarily concerns the reinforcement of bilateral ties between our two countries, as well as the security landscape in the region, especially in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a shared concern for our states,” the Congolese minister stated.

Floribert Anzuluni conveyed his profound gratitude to President Évariste Ndayishimiye for his careful consideration of President Félix Tshisekedi’s message. He further commended the Burundian President’s proactive leadership, in his role as the African Union’s current Chairperson, in advancing efforts towards achieving lasting peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo and the broader Great Lakes region, a topic of significant pan-African news interest.

The Democratic Republic of Congo and the Republic of Burundi share a rich history of friendship, solidarity, and collaborative engagement. This dynamic partnership was notably invigorated by President Évariste Ndayishimiye’s official visit to Kinshasa on June 22, at the invitation of President Félix Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo. Both heads of state consistently reaffirm their shared commitment to restoring peace in the Great Lakes region, bolstering bilateral cooperation, and fostering regional integration.

Prior to his visit to Burundi, President Félix Tshisekedi’s envoy traveled to Uganda, where he was welcomed by President Yoweri Museveni. Subsequently, he proceeded to Lomé, Togo, where he met with Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, the President of the Council of Ministers of the Togolese Republic and the African Union’s mediator in the ongoing conflict between the Democratic Republic of Congo and Rwanda concerning Kigali’s alleged military and logistical support for the AFC/M23 rebellion.

These series of high-level meetings unfold amidst continued hostilities in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. The AFC/M23 rebellion, which Kinshasa and various international reports assert is backed by Rwanda, persists in its offensive against government forces. The movement maintains control over substantial areas of North Kivu and South Kivu provinces and continues to solidify its positions on the ground. Meanwhile, diplomatic initiatives launched in Washington and Doha have yet to pave the way for a definitive and sustainable resolution to the conflict, highlighting the complexities of African politics and regional stability.
