The day after France’s national holiday, Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu embarked on a two-day official visit to Morocco, marking a pivotal moment in the revitalization of bilateral relations between the two nations. This trip follows a historic message from King Mohammed VI to President Emmanuel Macron, emphasizing that both countries are entering a new era to elevate their exceptional partnership into a forward-looking model. This strategic alignment is set to pave the way for a future royal visit to France, where a landmark treaty will be signed to formalize this strengthened alliance, according to local reports.
In his first official journey to the Kingdom since assuming office in 2025, Lecornu arrived with a robust delegation of twelve ministers, including Foreign Affairs chief Jean-Noël Barrot and Interior Minister Laurent Nunez. The French Prime Minister held private discussions with Moroccan counterpart Aziz Akhannouch before co-chairing a high-level meeting. The outcome of these talks includes the signing of multiple bilateral agreements spanning critical sectors such as economics, migration, justice, and defense.
Economic cooperation took center stage, with a focus on co-development initiatives across Africa. Leveraging Morocco’s role as a logistics and financial hub, businesses from both nations aim to launch joint projects aligned with the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). The Kingdom’s booming trade, with intra-African exports surging by 20.7% in 2025, combined with its integration into the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS), creates a secure environment for investments. Given global geopolitical tensions, particularly around the Strait of Hormuz, Morocco’s port infrastructure now stands as a vital alternative for trade routes connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa, industry analysts highlight.
The partnership also prioritizes regional security, as both Paris and Rabat face shared challenges from instability in the Sahel. With porous borders and escalating terrorist threats, the two nations are intensifying their security and migration coordination to solidify this exceptional alliance, aiming to elevate it to new heights.
