Ivorian Diplomacy Rejects Criticism of Alassane Ouattara’s Leadership
The Embassy of Côte d’Ivoire to France and Monaco has issued a formal protest against comments made by French politician Jean-Luc Mélenchon during a political rally in France. The statement, released in Paris, strongly condemns his remarks as an affront to Ivorian institutions, its people, and President Alassane Ouattara.
In a signed declaration by Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman, the embassy criticizes Mélenchon for accusing President Ouattara of disqualifying opponents during the last presidential election and securing a fourth term deemed “unconstitutional.”
The diplomatic representation dismisses these claims as “irresponsible, disrespectful, insulting, and degrading,” emphasizing that Mélenchon lacks any authority or legitimacy to comment on Côte d’Ivoire’s electoral processes, which have been independently validated.
Highlighting the nation’s sovereignty since gaining independence on 7 August 1960, the embassy underscores that no foreign official has the right to undermine Ivorian institutions or its leadership.
Diplomatic Ties and Respectful Relations
The statement also acknowledges the longstanding friendship and cooperation between Côte d’Ivoire and France, rooted in mutual respect. These ties have been strengthened under the leadership of Presidents Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Alassane Ouattara. The embassy stresses that political figures in France should consider the broader implications of their statements on bilateral relations.
In closing, the Ivorian Embassy warns it will pursue all legal avenues to address what it considers an insult to the Ivorian people and their president. The declaration, dated 16 July 2026, was signed by Ambassador Maurice Kouakou Bandaman.
