Legal proceedings have been initiated against Ousmane Sonko, the former Prime Minister, current National Assembly President, and leader of PASTEF, following remarks made during the inauguration of his party’s headquarters. A collective representing the descendants of Serigne Touba has formally lodged a complaint with the Public Prosecutor at the Dakar High Court of First Instance.
The complaint centers on statements attributed to Sonko, in which he reportedly claimed that “dirty money entered the holy city of Touba.” The plaintiffs argue that these remarks tarnish the honor, dignity, and reputation of Touba, its inhabitants, and the legacy of its founding figure.

Demands for investigation and accountability
The complainants, who identify themselves as citizens, young intellectuals, and economic operators alongside their role as descendants of Touba’s founder, have urged the Prosecutor to open a formal investigation. Their request includes summoning Sonko to clarify his statements, provide evidence supporting them, and allow authorities to determine their factual basis or lack thereof.
The plaintiffs maintain that the allegations have caused significant reputational harm to Touba and its people, emphasizing the need for legal recourse to restore dignity and protect the city’s sacred image. They seek not only an apology but also legal consequences for what they describe as defamatory remarks.
