The Government of Mali has announced the restoration of diplomatic and air travel connections with Algeria, signaling a significant thaw in bilateral relations. In an official statement released this Friday, authorities confirmed the return of Mali’s Ambassador to Algiers, marking a key step in rebuilding mutual trust and cooperation.

According to the statement, the decision follows Algeria’s earlier move to reopen its airspace to Malian aircraft. Mali reciprocated by lifting restrictions on Algerian flights entering and leaving its territory. Both measures were implemented within hours of each other, reflecting a synchronized effort to normalize relations between the two nations.

In the communiqué, the Malian transitional government emphasized its commitment to fostering stronger ties with Algeria. It stated, « In the spirit of reviving cooperation and friendship between the Republic of Mali and the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, the Malian Government has decided to restore full diplomatic representation in Algiers. » The statement also confirmed the immediate reopening of Mali’s airspace to all civilian and military aircraft operating between the two countries.

This development comes after months of reduced diplomatic engagement and travel restrictions, which had strained relations between Bamako and Algiers. The renewed cooperation is expected to enhance regional stability and facilitate increased trade, security collaboration, and humanitarian exchanges between West Africa and North Africa.
