Escalating violence in northern Mali has reached a critical juncture, with intense fighting erupting over control of the strategic town of Anéfis. Military authorities revealed a devastating toll from the clashes, marking one of the deadliest confrontations in the region this year.
Anéfis: a battlefield with high stakes
The town of Anéfis, located roughly 100 kilometers south of Kidal, has become the epicenter of a brutal struggle for dominance. According to military sources, the fighting has been relentless, with both sides suffering significant casualties in a bid to secure this key position.
The Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) have borne the brunt of the losses, with the general staff confirming the death of nearly 30 soldiers, described as “martyrs” in official statements. An additional 60-plus soldiers were injured, some critically, highlighting the ferocity of the engagement.
Rebel coalition claims heavy losses
In response, the Malian military asserted that it had inflicted heavy casualties on the opposing coalition, which includes separatist factions such as the National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad (MNLA) and armed groups linked to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (JNIM). While the rebels acknowledged the loss of “some of their best fighters,” they refrained from providing an exact death toll.
The strategic importance of Anéfis cannot be overstated. For the Malian military, backed by Russian allies, securing this location is crucial to disrupting supply routes for armed groups and reinforcing control over the route to Kidal.
A fight for survival
Military accounts describe the battle as exceptionally violent, with Malians and Russian reinforcements temporarily confined to a military base under sustained assault. A heavily armed convoy, departing from Gao and backed by aerial support, eventually turned the tide in favor of government forces. Rebel factions, meanwhile, described their withdrawal as a “strategic retreat” to prevent civilian casualties.
Junta under pressure to deliver on promises
The bloodshed in Anéfis underscores the persistent challenges facing Mali’s transitional government, which has staked its legitimacy on restoring security and territorial integrity. The heavy losses suffered by the Malian military serve as a stark reminder of the resilience of armed groups in the region, prolonging a costly war of attrition that continues to exact a tragic human toll.
